Running Cadence, Or How Many Footsteps Per Minute? | Print |  E-mail

By Thomas O'Leary

I have been doing a bit of research on the whole running cadence concept and I have found out some interesting results.

Apparently the number of steps per minute (cadence in cycling terms) that an elite athlete will take on average doesn’t vary as much as I would expect. For any elite distance runner (over about 3000m) you can predict that they will be running at about 180 steps per minute (90 left foot and 90 right foot) regardless of how fast they are running.

When It's Time to Adapt Your Tempo Run | Print |  E-mail

By Richard Shryack

During every marathon training program that I have ever designed there always comes a time to adapt. This week the weather has been rather challenging. For the past week now it has been warm and exceptionally humid. I have decided to do my tempo training today on the treadmill.

My usual tempo run during marathon training is 10 or 11 miles. I have had great success using this for marathons and half marathons.

Half Marathon Training for Beginners | Print |  E-mail

By Nolan O'sullivan

To prepare yourself in 10 weeks for a half marathon, you have to be able to run 3 miles, three to four times a week. If you have never set foot in a pair of running shoes, then why not get fit for a shorter run instead? With four weeks' training, you will be able to do a 3 mile race, and you will be prepped to do a 7 mile run if you hang in there for eight weeks.

The training regime below is made up of the following components:

Jogging Makes You Slow | Print |  E-mail

By Tim Goodwin

We have all done it, you have probably been ordered to do it by your coach, you'll probably want to do it to lose some weight... But is jogging really the answer to your training needs.

I mean, will going for a jog solve your lack of endurance in a game of squash, rugby, football or golf?

Are you lumping around more body fat around the court than you absolutely have too so you feel that a jog around the block will make this go away...

What I write over the next page or so will probably annoy you, you may even flat out disagree with me. All I ask is that you keep an open mind.

Running Headphone Requirements | Print |  E-mail

By Jeffrey Meier

You have made a commitment to yourself to start a running program to get yourself into shape. So what is the most important part of the program that most people fail to consider? I would ask you to think about the choice of Mp3 player and a pair of running headphones. The need to listen to some music while exercising is nothing new, and many people are already doing so, however if you are like most people, you

How To Dramatically Improve Your Running Speed | Print |  E-mail

By Mike Toal

This article gives an overview of the essential techniques required to enable an athlete to run faster.

To increase any athletes speed means improving on one or both of the following elements:

1. Increase the number of steps an athlete takes per second i.e. their cadence.

2. Improve the effectiveness of each time they make contact with the ground.
